This past week we celebrated nine years since diagnosis day. For fun I looked back at my photo/video library from the days surrounding those initial days of diagnosis. I posted a video on our social media from that day July 29, 2011 sitting at the dinner table watching our littles (then 3 y.o. and 18 mos) enjoy a treat of cupcakes. I do recall pretty vividly willing myself to not let the “sucker punch in the gut” feeling steal the joy of those smiles that were suddenly taking on a whole new meaning in light of what the breast surgeon had explained to Blake and me a few hours earlier. The more time that passes, the harder it seems to remember what life was like before that day, and it is only natural to take things for granted. The word that I received on Wednesday as I considered all the goodness of the last nine years came from the Message version of Philippians 1:22-25. Although there are days that I would certainly choose heaven NOW!, I claim as I did in 2011 that I am still in the fight and there is good work yet to do!
22-25 As long as I’m alive in this body, there is good work for me to do. If I had to choose right now, I hardly know which I’d choose. Hard choice! The desire to break camp here and be with Christ is powerful. Some days I can think of nothing better. But most days, because of what you are going through, I am sure that it’s better for me to stick it out here. So I plan to be around awhile, companion to you as your growth and joy in this life of trusting God continues.
